Chris “Pintado” Martinez creates oil paintings that carry the weight of inheritance—of land, labor, blood, and identity.

Working with a restrained, earth-based palette rooted in classical tradition, Martinez approaches painting as both discipline and craft. Each piece is built slowly and deliberately, prioritizing structure, atmosphere, and permanence over trend or speed. The result is work that feels grounded—designed to hold its presence over time, not just capture attention in the moment.

His defining body of work, The Inheritance Series—Inherited Ground, Inherited Steel, and Inherited Blood—explores what is passed down across generations. These paintings are not romantic interpretations of the past, but confrontations with it. They reflect the reality of work, environment, and lineage, asking the viewer to consider not only where they come from, but what they carry forward.

Drawing from his upbringing in rural Florida and his life in Appalachia, as well as his Mexican and Native heritage, Martinez paints figures shaped by experience rather than idealization. His subjects are often quiet, but never passive—marked by resilience, tension, and presence.

Each painting is created as a singular work—meant to exist in physical space, to be lived with, and to reveal more over time. His originals are intentionally limited, with prints serving as a secondary offering, reinforcing the rarity and value of the original works.

Martinez’s work is collected for its honesty, its craftsmanship, and its refusal to compromise—offering pieces that do not simply decorate a space, but define it.

BIO

Chris “Pintado” Martinez was born in Fort Myers, Florida, and raised in Immokalee—an experience that continues to inform the foundation of his work.

Entirely self-taught, he developed his skill through decades of disciplined practice rather than formal education. Over the past 20 years, Martinez has built a career as both a fine artist and tattooer, mastering his craft through repetition, observation, and real-world application.

He currently works from his private studio in Johnson City, Tennessee, at the base of Buffalo Mountain—an environment that directly influences the tone and subject matter of his paintings.

Martinez’s work is driven by a broader commitment to craftsmanship and self-reliance. Outside of painting, he is actively engaged in hunting, fishing, cooking, woodworking, metalworking, and photography—disciplines that reinforce the authenticity and lived experience behind his subject matter.

He is a husband and father of five, and approaches both his work and his life with a long-term perspective—focused on building a body of work that endures, rather than one that simply circulates.

His paintings are held in private collections and are part of an evolving body of work centered on legacy, identity, and the realities of inherited experience.
